Orasay Inn Lochcarnan HS8 5PD Isle of South Uist Region: Scotland
Description:
Orasay Inn is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty at the north end of South Uist, centrally placed for exploring the southern part of the Outer Hebrides.
The islands, all linked by causeways, are (from north) Berneray, North Uist,
Benbecula, South Uist and Eriskay, with Barra a 35 minutes by ferry.
Owned and managed by Alan & Isobel Graham, Orasay is a small hotel and restaurant, which serves some of the finest food in the Hebrides. Superb fish and seafood comes fresh from boat to hotel kitchen, supplied by local fishermen. Fresh meat, poultry, game and vegetables are delivered from discerning, reliable producers and suppliers.
Around 80% of beef comes from our own herd of Highland Cattle and almost all lamb is locally produced. With quality ingredients and her own creative style of cooking, Isobel, who is also a 'Natural Cooking of Scotland' trainer, is able to offer the wide range of dishes on which her reputation has thrived.
Meals, all freshly prepared to order, can be chosen from our a la carte menu or "Catch of the Day" board. Our second chef is also a qualified baker and produces fresh bread, scones and a selection of mouth watering desserts to round off your meal experience.
Fine wines, from around the world, are available from our wine list.
Meals are served in our tastefully appointed dining room or weather permitting on the elevated decked area, both afford superb sea and mountain views.
All rooms are centrally heated, en suite, with tea/coffee, hairdryer TV and telephone. Deluxe rooms have patio doors to a private decked area, with outstanding views. We serve full Scottish or continental breakfast.
Quote from 'The Sunday Times' Travel Section in an article on the Outer Hebrides:
Finally, don’t forget to eat some seafood. The scallops, in particular, are enormous and one of the best ways to enjoy them is as part of a seafood platter at the Orasay Inn. Home to one of the best chefs on the islands”.
Directions:
There are regular ferry and airline services to our islands. The ferry operator for mainland and inter-island ferry services is Caledonian MacBrayne.
Ferries run from Oban to Lochboisdale on South Uist and from Uig, Isle of Skye (accessible by bridge) to Lochmaddy in North Uist.
For a journey, south to north, throughout the islands of the Outer Hebrides, take the ferry from Oban to Castlebay, Isle of Barra.
Travel north through the Uists on to Harris and Lewis, using the inter-island service to cross The Sound of Barra and The Sound of Harris.
From Stornoway, Isle of Lewis there is a ferry to Ullapool, Wester Ross (1 hours travelling time to Inverness).
If preferred the journey can be done, north to south, starting from Ullapool.
Though it is possible to travel the length of the islands in 2/3 days, we recommend that plenty time is taken to appreciate the delights and diversity of the different islands in the chain.
